the game that suits you. You may stink at one, but rule at another. (fixed limit is most
suitable for beginners.

Fold most hands
Do not stay in a hand just in case a miracle card comes up, or you will go broke
faster than a Star Trek fan on a sci-fi convention. Poker requires a lot of patience. A
good player will fold most hands, about 80% in a 10-player game (60% in 6-player
game). The sure sign of a bad player is one who falls in love with every hand,
usually paying to see the flop and then chasing straight and flush draws or hoping a
low pair stands up.
Tilt!
Tilt is the poker equivalent of going bananas and playing like a madman(playing
hands you usually wouldn’t because of tiredness).Poker is an emotional game and
you will feel the urge. Fight it, or it will ruin everything. And, if you can, make others
tilt.

It’s all about the odds
Don’t play against impossible odds! If there’s just one card in the entire deck that
helps your hand, well then you’re screwed 51 out of 52 times. Know the most
important odds.
The rule of pot odds
When faced with a tricky should-I-call-or-not decision; consider how big the pot is. A
really big pot might make the call worth it. Always weigh THE odds of the winning
hand against the size of the pot.
.For example if you have 4 to a flush, including an ace, after the turn the table shows
your probability of making the flush on the river is 20%. Assuming a flush will win
the pot, and you are the last to act, there needs to be 5 times the bet to you, in the
pot to make calling a good bet.
Read your opponent
Figure out your opponents hand by noticing his style and his strategy. Is he
aggressive? Or is he tight and folds a lot?
Try to know your opponents. All you should endeavor to do is know who is loose
and who is tight. Most money to be made at poker is from a few inexperienced
players who consistently play weak hands. It is important to be able to identify those
players, and more importantly to not be one of them. When playing online you
should take a tally of how often each player is in on the river. The greater the
percentage the looser the player.

Commit!
The ace, ace (AA) and king, king (KK) are typical starting hands that very seldom
should be played passively. They are at their best early in a hand, so don’t hesitate
to commit. Be aggressive! Bad players reguraly slow play good cards – if you have
the cards bet respectively and get value for your cards.
Make them pay
If you think your opponent is drawing to a hand be sure to make him pay for the
draw! Don’t be scared and wait for him to hit the draw. If you do, he will run you over
like a monster truck in a crowded car park!
Faking your tells
You know by now what your opponents are watching out for. By faking your tells –
maybe thinking for a while although you have the nuts – you may trick them into
making really costly moves – for them.
Don’t fall in love!
Even though two aces is the best hand to start off with, the board may kill them. If
you suspect that all the other players now have better cards, you’re probably right.
Learn to drop them, or it will cost you.
Bring enough chips
A big stack gives you a psychological advantage over small stacks. Always bring a
minimum of 50-100 times the big blind to the table when you buy in. This ought to
cover for any bad luck streaks.
On bluffing
As a general rule, don’t try to steal a pot by trying to bluff a poor player, a heavy
winner or a heavy loser. They will either figure you out or just get lucky. Either way
you lose.
You can fool some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time,
but you cannot fool all of the people all the time." - Abraham Lincoln
For the beginner in a low limit game don't try any fancy stuff. Never bluff with
garbage. Sometimes do a semi-bluff with a questionable hand just so your not too
predictable.
Play the right hands
You need A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, A-K, or A-Q suited, to raise, reraise, or cap it. In short,
just put more money in. If you have 10-10, 9-9, 8-8, any suited blackjack or suited
20-point hand, you can call one bet. But if it’s raised to you and you can’t reraise,
you can’t call two bets cold; you have to fold. After the flop, you can continue if you
have top pair (or could beat top pair), an open-end straight draw, or a flush draw.
Anything else, you are done with the hand!
Position Play
Position is extremely important in poker. The later you are to act the more
information you have about your opponents cards judging by how they played. The
earlier you are to play the more selective you should be about the cards you play.
For example a low pair is usually worth playing before the flop in late position but
not in early position. To become a good player, one must understand this. A good
starting hand in an early position may actually be a worse hand to play than a bad
hand in late position.
Male or female?
When playing online you should use a female name. Men at the table will often not
give their best game against a woman. Most will play more passively but some
more aggressively.
