For example, you intend to fold when it is your turn to act and
you check the "fold in turn box" to save you the time. You
will experience greater bankroll swings in the short-run when
playing at multiple tables. At times you will lose at all tables
and, at times, you will win at all. You must prepare yourself to
handle these swings. If winning is important to you, only play
at multiple tables if you are already a winning player.
Otherwise you will just increase your hourly losing rate.
There are different ways to play at multiple tables. For
example, you can manually switch back and forth between the
tables, or you can let the software tell you when it is your
turn to act. It is often good to use the pre-action fold button
on all trash hands to give you more time for the real decisions.
If you have a screen with 1600 by 1200 pixels resolution you
will be able to fit four tables in the screen without overlap.
Some online poker software (like for instance Cryptologic with
poker rooms like Inter Poker) will still give you a minimal
overlap, but only at about 10%. If you play multiple table play,
a 1600 by 1200 screen will benefit you greatly as you will be
able to follow your opponent's actions much more accurately.
This can be the difference between breaking even and making a
decent profit. This is in particular true if you are playing
high stakes no-limit games, where higher attention is required.
Good flat screen 21 inch monitors with 1600 by 1200 pixels sell
for as low as $800-$900 in the US. One technique some
players prefer for multi table play is to just
open up two tables first and play until they
feel comfortable at these tables, getting a good
picture of how the opponents are playing. Only
then, after for example 30-40 minutes they open
up a third and maybe forth table and work on
getting a good picture of the opponents there as
well.
